Foundations

This section outlines the foundation concepts upon which the IT Kanban Framework is structured. These concepts have been selected to put the framework in context relative to the IT delivery process. To accomplish the vision of continuous improvement the framework adopts a holistic conceptual approach. A holistic conceptual approach is essential if we are to achieve the ambition and reap the rewards of ‘systemic thinking’ and ‘whole system optimisation’.

There are six foundation concepts that underpin the IT Kanban Framework; they start with the vision of continuous improvement and end with the mechanism by which we will measure our progress towards that goal. They all describe essential elements to be considered in a mature lean IT organisation.

5 Strategies

6 Measures

When applying the practices outlined in the IT Kanban Framework it is advisable to consider these foundation concepts. The framework is not intended to be an entirely prescribed set of practices that will be an appropriate fit for every development or implementation scenario. The framework represents a set of advised practices with proven success that offer a starting point for adoption of Kanban, Kaizen, and lean systems thinking within IT organisations. In addition, the framework is not intended to be applied as a practice-based tick list where all practices must be applied as a whole to achieve any benefit. This framework is structured to support incremental organisational change and continuous improvement, where the framework is adopted both selectively and incrementally. An understanding of these foundation concepts will assist in both the selection of practices from the framework and modification of those practices when applied to any given development or implementation scenario.
